In today's fast-paced world, silence and solitude can be a rarity. Many of us are constantly surrounded by noise, distractions, and the demands of modern life, leaving little room for quiet reflection. However, as followers of Christ, it is essential to carve out time for silence and solitude to connect with God more deeply.
Silence and solitude are unusual for people. We grow within a womb surrounded by biological noises. As our hearing develops we can hear and distinguish external sounds too. From the moment we are born, we rely on the attentive presence of others for our survival and naturally use sound to communicate our needs. We are created to survive and thrive in community not isolation. However, we cannot effectively give our time, energy or wisdom to others without regularly taking time to connect singularly with our Creator.
Growing up I was rarely home alone for any considerable length of time. While studying for my degree I moved out for a year. I shared a house on a very quiet road with two others. The first time I was home alone in this new residence the stillness and quiet were disconcerting. I could hear unfamiliar sounds I did not yet tune out or trust. I was also very aware of myself. I had to learn to become comfortable with my own presence and not to fear the silence. Over time, I came to value silence and solitude but it was some time before I began to actively connect this to the practice of my Christian faith.
Many of us live with plenty of opportunities for distractions and far fewer to experience true silence and solitude. When noise is the norm, silence and solitude become unusual, uncomfortable and unappealing—even causing fear. Because they can be so unusual it can help to understand the practice and purpose of silence and solitude.
The Purpose of Silence and Solitude

In Celebration of Discipline, Richard Foster writes:
The purpose of silence and solitude is to be able to see and hear.
When Christians commit to silence and solitude it must be to see and hear God instead of and above external and internal noise and distractions. This means rather than focusing on being without noise we focus on being with God; we look and listen to God despite whatever else might be vying for our attention. In these quiet moments, we can hear the gentle whispers of God's voice, guiding us and speaking to our hearts. Silence and solitude provide a sanctuary away from the chaos of the world as we look to God and focus on what truly matters.
In Matthew 6:33 Jesus says,
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
In fact, as we read Matthew 6:25-34, we see that the answer to anxiety is silence. Instead of giving voice to anxious thoughts ("'What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’" v. 31), we are to quieten and dispel them by seeking God.
Silence and solitude are not just about escaping the noise of the world. They are a way to create space for God to work in our lives. During this time of communion with the Holy Spirit, we can lay our burdens at His feet, seeking His wisdom and presence. We are reminded of the profound truth that God is always with us, willing and able to meet our needs.
Practical Ways to Embrace Silence and Solitude

Start Small: Begin by allocating short periods of time each day for silence and solitude. It can be as simple as a few minutes of quiet reflection in the morning or before bed.
Disconnect: Turn off electronic devices and create a physical space free from distractions. Find a peaceful corner in your home, a quiet park, or a chapel where you can retreat for moments of solitude.
Engage in Contemplative Practices: Prayer, meditation, and reading scripture are excellent ways to foster silence and solitude. Allow God's word to speak to your heart and meditate on His promises.
Nature Walks: Spending time in nature can be a powerful way to experience God's presence in the silence of creation. Take a walk in a park, or sit by a pond or stream, and consider the beauty of God's handiwork.
Lead with Silence: As tempting as it can be to speak first, start by listening expectantly for the Holy Spirit's voice.
“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” - Matthew 6:6 ESV
Cultivating a Habit of Silence and Solitude
Recently, the electricity went out whilst I was home alone. The TV was off and as it was daytime, no lights were on. I knew the electricity had gone out because the silence suddenly deepened as all the background hums from the household appliances and electronic devices ceased. I could hear the chirp of the birds more clearly and some distant traffic from the main road. It highlighted how noisy my usual silence is. It reminded me that I could hear God more clearly if I quieted the inner background noises of my thoughts and feelings that I had grown accustomed to. It is possible to be in a busy and bustling environment and have silence and solitude within. True silence and solitude are not only external. Far from it, it is an internally cultivated state.
Making silence and solitude a regular part of our spiritual practice requires intentionality and commitment. Just as we make time for work, family, and social activities, setting time aside for quiet reflection is crucial for our spiritual growth. The benefits of practising silence and solitude extend beyond our personal lives; they equip us to serve others with compassion, empathy, and grace.
In a world filled with noise and distractions, embracing silence and solitude is a radical act of faith. It is a declaration that our souls crave moments of stillness to commune with our true Source. Let's heed the call to step away from the clamour of the world to seek the gentle whispers of God's love. May we discover the profound peace that comes from resting in God's presence and embracing the beauty of silence.
