God is Good

God is good... All the time! All the time... God is good!

God's goodness is constant and enduring. It is an unbreakable guarantee. God's goodness does not depend on us. It is a quality of God whether or not people exist and regardless of our belief in it or our behaviour toward God. God is always good. Sit with that for a moment.

Sometimes we think things go well for us because God is good and then go badly because God has stopped being good. We may not phrase it that way, but our response to challenges can reveal our true beliefs. Other times we congratulate ourselves when things go well and blame God when they don't.

Is your belief in God's goodness as constant as His goodness? Does it waver in challenging personal circumstances or when we see war, death or destruction? Do we doubt God's goodness when we don't get the answer to prayer we desire or when we see others with what we are waiting on God for? Take a few moments to ask the Holy Spirit to show you what you believe about God's goodness.

We can bolster our belief in the goodness of God by meditating on Scripture about the goodness of God. It is important to understand that God is good. Otherwise, we will believe that His goodness is limited, fickle or not for us (or others).

Another way we can renew our minds to the goodness of God is to count our blessings. Everyday list 3 ways God's goodness has been on display that day. Try not to repeat any of the ways you have already listed in the last 7 days. Write them down if you like so you can have something to review with thanksgiving.

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! 

Psalm 25:8

Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! 

Psalm 145:9

The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made. 

Isaiah 61:1

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

Nahum 1:7  

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. 

Psalm 84:11

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favour and honour. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.
