Build a Scripture Writing Habit

Updated: Jan 17

Writing Scripture is a spiritual discipline that helps deepen our engagement with God's Word. Daily Scripture writing is a great habit to form. Read about the benefits and join me in writing out one of my favourite books of the Bible in easy bitesize portions.

The Benefits of Scripture Writing

I love to Write the Scriptures. Here are some key reasons people write Scripture and make it a habit:

1. Deeper Understanding

  • Writing verses by hand encourages you to slow down and meditate on each word and its meaning.

  • It aids in uncovering connections, themes, and insights that might be missed when simply reading.

2. Enhanced Memory

  • The physical act of writing helps reinforce memory, making it easier to recall specific passages and principles.

3. Focus and Clarity

  • Writing Scripture removes distractions, allowing for focused time with God.

  • It encourages quietness of mind, helping to absorb the message more fully.

4. Meditation and Reflection

  • Repeating Scripture through writing helps you meditate on its truths throughout the day.

  • It enables you to ponder how the passage applies to your life.

5. Emotional and Spiritual Growth

  • Writing Scripture can bring comfort, peace, and encouragement, especially in times of trial or stress.

  • It helps build a stronger connection with God by keeping your mind centred on His Word.

Quote from Isaiah 26:3 on a beige background with colourful flowers: "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you" Mood is calm and peaceful.

6. Prayerful Engagement

  • Scripture writing can become a form of prayer, as the written words become personal and relational.

  • It aligns your thoughts with God's will as you reflect on His teachings.

7. Creative Expression

  • For those who enjoy journaling or calligraphy, writing scripture offers a way to worship God creatively.

  • Artistic expression through Scripture writing can make the practice even more meaningful.

8. Legacy and Sharing

  • A written record of Scripture can be a cherished keepsake for future generations.

  • Sharing your Scripture writing can inspire and encourage others in their faith.

Whether you are a seasoned believer or exploring your faith, writing Scripture is a transformative practice that invites God's Word into the fabric of daily life. Why not try it today?

Build a Scripture Writing Habit with a Scripture Writing Plan

The saying goes, 'If you fail to plan, you plan to fail'. You may already be familiar with Bible Reading Plans. Scripture Writing Plans work along the same lines but rather than providing a schedule of Scripture to read, they have a schedule of Scripture to copy from the Bible. Scripture writing plans can cover a book or books or be based on a theme such as joy, faith, overcoming fear or the names of Jesus.

I include seven themed Scriptures to write in my email devotions to encourage subscribers to Write the Scriptures and think deeply about their meaning. You can read many of them here. I use Scripture Writing sheets to write out these Scriptures. I have a dedicated notebook for all the other Scripture I write.

I usually write the Scriptures in the morning, before the children are awake and the house and surroundings are as quiet as a city can be. I have always enjoyed jotting down verses on sticky notes, paper or in a notebook, but I probably started Scripture writing more systematically when I began writing out Psalm 119 as part of my journey to memorising it. I have found it to be a beautiful way to start the day. While writing I must focus on just one thing. If my mind wanders I will notice right away because I will make a mistake. I cannot dwell on whatever caused my focus to drift; I must capture my attention and direct it to the Word of God. This makes Scripture writing an effective antidote to worry and trainer of the wandering mind. The more consistently I Write the Scriptures the more I am more able to take every thought captive and make it obey Christ as 2 Corinthians 10:5 admonishes. This goes for when I am writing Scripture and when I am not.

Tips for Building a Scripture Writing Habit

My tips for building a Scripture writing habit are:

  • Have a dedicated place to write

  • Keep all you need to write in that space so you do not find yourself searching for stationery

  • Choose a regular day and time to hang your habit on

  • Focus more on the Word than the presentation (even if you write artistically) but do try to keep it legible as reading over your handwritten Scripture has it's own blessings

  • Check for accuracy especially if you or others will be reading it. Writing smaller portions can help with accuracy and make reviewing a quick process.

  • Start small; shorter texts every day work well for building a habit.

I like to pause and focus before I start and after I finish. I read the text through at least once before writing it, then I read each verse through before writing it.

The Proverbs 101 Scripture Writing Plan

How will you start the New Year? I will be writing out the Book of Proverbs. Why don't you join me?

Proverbs 101 checklist with colorful design. "Write the Scriptures" text appears. Pastel hues and a pen graphic create a calm vibe.

Proverbs is 31 chapters or 915 verses long, but this is not a race to the finish. I believe there is great benefit in taking time to walk through the Word of God. After all, the Bible calls our faith a walk far more often than a race!

I want to journey slowly through the book of Proverbs, to soak in its wisdom and take in as much as possible of God's instruction within. Due to its length, people often read a chapter a day. It does not take long, but it can take around 4 times as long to copy something out than to read it, so writing a chapter a day consistently is not feasible for me. Perhaps it is the same for you.

It would be harder for me to build a habit if I did not know how long it would take to finish the Book and if I had to work out how much I should write out each time I began. I decided to make a plan. I worked out that I can write out just a few verses a day and finish writing the Book of Proverbs in 101 days. I have turned my plan into an tracker to monitor my progress. I thought I would share it with you.

It is not dated so you can start any time, like today. What better way to start a year than building a Scripture writing habit?

If you are not ready to Write the Scriptures, use the Scripture Writing Schedule to read through Proverbs. The bite-sized chunks of Scripture are great for meditation, allowing the Word to sink in. You might even decide to write out one verse from the daily reading each day or just occasionally. Do what works best for you!

I hope you decide to join me on this walk through the Book of Proverbs.

Let me know in the comments if you do!

Blessing in Action: Build a Scripture Writing Habit

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you" Isaiah 26:3

Writing Scripture is one way to keep my mind stayed on God. What can you do for the next 12 months that will help you enjoy the perfect peace that comes from training your mind on God because you trust in Him?

Write it down and work out a plan of action for the year.

Blessings!
